Clothing Material - Why it matters

If you have a look in your closet there’s a good chance you have no clue what the label on your clothing will say. Choosing clothing by the material is not in today’s shopping trends. Before I started to take note of what my clothing was made of, I wouldn’t be able to tell you anything about it. The only material I really knew was cotton, polyester, wool, linen, acrylic, spandex etc.

In todays fashion world, they want you to buy more, buy cheaper, and buy for trends. The problem is, cheap clothes don’t last, trends are for a couple months, and if you want more you have to buy cheaper if you aren’t rich.

3 Reasons to care about what your clothing is made of

  1. Natural vs Synthetic - What you put on your skin is important
What chemicals and dyes go on clothing will be on your skin all day

  2. Function of Material - dressing for the occasion
Clothing should be comfortable and worn for different activities and weather.

  3. Caring for Clothing - washing clothing to make them last will go a long way.
Unfortunately I didn’t wash a gorgeous wool cardigan right and it started to shrink. I would still be wearing it to this day. Often times I find wool clothing in thrift stores that are in such bad shape because of not washing them properly.

At first, it can seem overwhelming and by no means should you get rid of anything and everything in your closet that is not of natural fibres. But understanding the benefits and buying for reason can be fun, and in the long term, healthy.

Creating a wardrobe that is natural, timeless and for purpose can help save time, money and good for your overall health.
